Bamboo is one of the major and important natural resources of Tripura. The state sustains tropical moist deciduous forests with patches of forests of evergreen species and a substantial area under bamboo brakes. The climate ranges from moist to humid and annual rainfall varies between 2,250-2,500 mm. At least 19 species of bamboos are commonly found in the state (source: Forest Dept. Tripura). The extent of bamboo bearing area in the forests of the state is 3,246Km2
Tripura Bamboo Mission (TBM), an initiative of Govt of Tripura, is working for the development of the Bamboo sector in the state since 2006. It is involved in training & capacity building of the artisans, providing design and market support, creation of production infrastructure and promotion of bamboo plantation in private land. To facilitate the marketing of the bamboo handicraft and other products manufactured by the rural artisans of Tripura, it constituted one artisan owned company namely “SIMANTA HANDICRAFT PRODUCTS PVT. LTD.” in the year 2015.
“Simanta Handicraft Products Private Limited” (SHPPL), established on 4th August 2015 under Registrar of Companies, Shillong, is providing marketing support to the local artisans engaged in bamboo crafts. Different artisan groups producing diverse bamboo products covering basketry products, mat based items, furniture, lamp sheds, decorative and special products, Agarbatti and Sitalpati based products are part of this SHPPL.
The organization is owned by the artisan groups and the SHGs promoted by TBM. One representative from each producer group is represented in the company to take care of the interest of the artisans who produce various bamboo handicraft and handloom products. Presently around 40 producer groups are associated with it for marketing their handicraft and handloom products.
SHPPL is focusing on bamboo based handicraft and handloom products mostly value added to meet the need of the different customer segment. The priority product category is mat based value added products like table mat, gift box, purse, clutch, file cover & folders, ladies hand bags etc. The other products are home décor bamboo products like lamps, lamp sheds etc. Bamboo basket made in two biggest basketry cluster of India located in Sepahijala district of Tripura, are produced and marketed in large scale to all over the country. It is mostly used as packaging material and by the fruit seller and the floweriest. Bamboo furniture is one of the priority products from Tripura which are made from the exclusive local bamboo called Kankacih. The other furniture made from Barak and Betu bamboo is also extensively marketed by us.
